Materials

Image result for wav"Materials" in film refers to any of the physical or digital artifacts used in the production. This will include resources you yourself have generated as well as archive footage and library materials that come in a variety of forms e.g. sound files, video footage.

Types of materials
. Original materials
Nick Robatto was a props maker for Doctor Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jones Adventures. He worked on the majority of the 6th season on Doctor Who, however there were episodes where he was not credited.  After the 6th season he left his full time job and made his own company which later provided props for season 7 of Doctor Who. The company he created was Rubbertoe props. Nick Robatto made the Screwdrivers for each doctor in-house, he made multiple replicas of each screwdriver. This is because some of the screwdrivers were required to extend so he made versions which extended and ones that did not extend.

. Archive and library materials
Film archive- a film archive is basically a collection of films which are categorized. A film archive could be of films from a country throughout a selected period of time or it could be archived based on genre.
There many film archives and libraries that exist. One example of a film archive is the BBC motion gallery

. Costumes
Costume is very important in film, if the costumes are not designed correctly during pre-production it could completely ruin the narrative of the film if the costume does not fit with the style of the film. If the film is set in a time period of the past the importance of costume increases because the actors can not work normal clothes they would have to be dressed in the fashion from that time period.

The Great Gatsby
Image result for the great gatsbyThe Great Gatsby is a film which was released in 2013, the film is set in the 1920's. The male actors of the film are dressed formally in suits of multiple colours like cream, brown and blue. These colours were very common for suits in the 1920's which makes the film look as if they are truly in the 1920's. Not only the colour and the actual clothing they are wearing makes the costumes believable. The fit of the costumes are also very key to making the costume believable. The suits in the film are tailored and fitted well however if the suits were just modern suits from today it would not look believable due to the style of suits being different now than they were in the 1920's.

Angels
Angels is a privately owned company which owns and makes costumes for film, performances and television. They have the largest collection of costumes for film out of any company in the world. They have over one million items. The company have worked on many productions including Titanic, Alice in Wonderland (2012), The Great Gatsby and Fantastic Beasts. All of theses productions won Oscars for "Best achievement in costume design.

Time and Resources
If there is not sufficient time allocated in pre-production to create the costumes it could cause the quality of the costumes being lower because the costumes were rushed to make sure they were finished by the deadline. In the worst case scenario the costumes were not finished by the deadline which would cause delays in filming, if the production has to have specific costumes like The Great Gatsby then filming will have to be delayed which has a domino affect which can negatively affect other departments in pre-production and production. For example if filming is delayed there might be equipment which was hired for that scene which have a short deadline. If the costumes are not finished in time and filming can not start then the equipment would have to be hired a second time which could risk going over budget.

. Properties
prop, formally known as theatrical property, is an object used on stage or on screen by actors during a performance or screen production. In practical terms, a prop is considered to be anything movable or portable on a stage or a set, distinct from the actors, scenery, costumes, and electrical equipment.
A property master has a very important job, they have to run the  property department. This includes overseeing all part of the department including the making of the props for the project. The project master has to check that all props are up to the standard of the director, they also have to make sure all props produced fit the aesthetic of the film the director is trying to create. To be a property master there is a long list you have to check off to see if you fit the job or not. This includes being able to work well under pressure and will to work long hours to complete work in tight deadlines. This is because working as head of a department can be very stressful and you have to make sure you reach deadlines or it can cause problems for other departments and the project as a whole, this means you will have to deal with a large amount of pressure throughout the production period of the film.

what value do props bring to a production and what would be the impact of not allocating?
Props are very important to a production especially film, props can help make the time period of the film more believable by using items that were very common in the time period the director is trying to set. An example of this would be going back to The Great Gatsby, in the film one of the most notable props which creates a strong feeling of the time period it is set in is the cars shown throughout the film.  Sometimes there are complications with props depending on the time period, in The Great Gatsby two cars which are used are a 1933 Aubury and a 1932 Duesenberg These cars fit well with the time period the film is set (1924) because they look like the cars which were produced during the time period however the cars used in the film were produced a few years later than when the film was set. This could be a problem because if the viewer knows this it can destroy the feeling of the time period that the director created.

. Recorded music
Depending on the project, recording audio and securing the rights to use copyrighted music might start during the pre-production stage. This could be due to the director having a certain piece of music they would like to use in a scene so to make sure the is possible they must receive permission from the owner of the music. This is done by going through the service the owner used to copyright their material and purchasing the right to use the music. There are many websites that offer this service. To copyright the original piece of music the owner has to register it. Websites that offer this service include copyright.gov and copyrightouse.co.uk. In other words the director might envisage a scene having a particular piece of music accompanying it and might coordinate his direction of the action with that piece of music in mind. This would mean if the specific piece of music was not available the whole scene will look unusual because the music it would have to use instead will not match well compared to the original music that was to be used. In any situation like this it would be important that the music clearance be obtained prior to production.

If the music clearance was not secured during pre-production it could cause problems during production, the director might want to use off-camera audio and direct the actors to respond to the sound. In situations like this it is even more important that the rights to use the audio is obtained before filming starts. If the clearance of the audio is not obtained before filming and the owner does not agree to the use of their material then the film can not be released with the scene unless the audio is changed or removed. If there are no circumstances where the director has picked specific audios or has directed a scene based around a piece of audio there can still be problems with not obtaining clearance of the music used. If the music chosen has not be cleared with the owner then the director will have to change the audio used because they do not have a right to use the audio chosen, if they went ahead and used the audio the owner of the audio could sue the director for copyright infringement. To fix this issue the director will have to change the audio which can take up time taken away from the production period which puts more pressure on the departments in production to make sure they still reach deadlines. A easy way of fixing this issue during production would be to use copyright free music which means there is no long process of obtaining clearance to use the audio because it is not copyrighted. There are many organisations that offer copyright free audio. Including Bensound and purple-planet.
